Stagecoach confirms £97million orders for new vehicles in 2016/17

Stagecoach Group has announced orders for 478 vehicles worth £97million to be delivered in the 2016-17 financial year. Alexander Dennis wins the lion’s share of the order with a total of 415 complete vehicles comprising E400 double-decks and E200 single-decks plus 21 Plaxton bodies on Volvo chassis. The orders also include 30 Mercedes Benz Sprinter City 45 minibuses, six Optare Solo SRs and six Van Hool Astromega double-deck coaches for megabus.

The number of hybrids is just 37 with a batch of E400Hs for London operations, while the rest are Euro 6 diesels.

Stagecoach says that all of the new vehicles will be fitted with CCTV and most will also feature free wi-fi for customers.

The latest announcement takes the group’s total orders of new buses and coaches to more than £1billion since 2006/07. The forthcoming batch represents £82million of new buses and coaches for Stagecoach’s regional networks in England, Scotland and Wales, £10million order for London and around £4.5million for megabus.com operations.

The biggest proportion of the order is 278 E400 MMC double-deck buses which will help towards meeting the requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act deadline for double-deck vehicles.

“Everything we do is about making travel even better for our customers,” says Stagecoach Group chief executive Martin Griffiths. “We are investing in state-of-the-art, cleaner, greener vehicles, digital technology and smart ticketing to raise the bar and deliver an even higher standard of service. These latest vehicle orders are an important part of our strategy to encourage even more people to take the bus.

“Local bus services are the backbone of the country’s transport networks. Stagecoach provides millions of people every day with a greener way to access work, health, education and leisure and we offer the best value bus fares in Britain.”
